In Fall 2015, I placed a chalkboard in the heart of the Mass. College of Liberal Arts’ campus, and I followed its journey over the course of several weeks. Placed below is a copy of Yadiris Valdez’s “I Wanna Hear a Poem.” My intention was to not only make this poem public in itself, but I also wanted to bring its essence to life. How? I asked – YOU – the public to be interactive – take a piece of chalk and write down a word, a phrase, a stanza, a sentence! Allow your creative voice to be heard.
The essence of Yadiris Valdez’s “I Wanna Hear a Poem” ventures to express the polysemous nature of poetry. For some writers, finding a subject to write about can be challenging, and this challenge stems from the question of what is worthy of being written. Yadiris Valdez asks her audience to recount a poem on nearly any topic with the attempt to reveal that poetry, naturally, can be about everything.
