Erica Barreto is an aspiring artist who explores aesthetics, political purpose, and hybridity. She has published her poetry in both Rye Magazine (2009) and Spires Literary Magazine (2016) in addition to her music reviews and artist interviews featured on Hypnotic Hippo, an entertainment blog “dedicated to covering the latest hits and trends of the art world” (2015). She also has taught writing, as part of the Writers Workshop for students at Drury High School (Spring 2015) as well as serving as a Writing Academic Tutor Counselor for incoming college freshman (Summer 2015). She is engaged in community-based work, including the Make Poetry Happen project; a chalkboard art installation which encouraged members of the community to create a collaborative poem. Barreto has received an award from The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts English Department in 2014 for outstanding work in the field, and she was inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society in October 2016. She is currently a Junior, majoring in English Communications at The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
I am a creative writer whose unfurling inspiration is rooted in a genuine curiosity for learning how to incite change. Gaining influence from artists who creatively explore the human condition, I am swayed to believe the art of writing has the capacity to transcend thinking and existing for the better. My writing exemplifies the desire to alter another’s perception and shape unconventional yet creative brainstorming. My work is not limited to one medium because I embrace all forms of expression: poetics, narratives, journalism, professional writing and pure creativity. I occasionally combine several mediums within one platform, such as intertwining music and poetics or collage art and language, thus heightening the act of writing to take hybrid shape. I seek to break the norm and revolutionize discourse by incorporating a variety of stylistic endeavors to complement my content. I aspire to move you fluidly, naturally endeavoring to engage the mind through text and encourage motivation across all audiences.
